These units are available to income eligible families.  The rent for these units are calculated based on 30% of the family’s adjusted gross income.  Unit size is assigned based on family composition.

  • The family will receive a letter with a scheduled appointment time to start the initial paperwork.
  • At this meeting the family will complete required paperwork and provide information about family composition, income, assets and rental history.
  • The family will also need to provide copies of social security cards and state-issued birth certificates for all family members.
  • A criminal background check may be done on family members age 18 and older.
  • Families must have a reasonable good rental history in order to qualify for Public Housing.
  • The family will be notified by mail or phone when their name has reached the top of the waiting list for the town they have requested.

Once the family information is verified and the family is approved for the program, the Executive Director will contact the family to set up a date to move into the available unit.  The family must have utilities in their name prior to move-in and pay a $150.00 security deposit.

Once on the program, tenants will be recertified at least annually.  If the family has changes in family composition or income, the family must contact their Housing Specialist within 10 days of the change.  The family must comply with all terms of the lease at all times.  In addition to an annual inspection, there will be periodic inspections of the rental unit of which the tenant will be notified in advance.

To inquire about Public Housing contact SIRHA by email VChristensen@sirha-ia.org phone, or at SIRHA’s office 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday thru Friday to get a preliminary application to be put on the waiting list.  You may also go to the application link at the bottom of this page and print an application.  The length of the waiting list depends on the size of the unit for which the family qualifies and vacancies in the area where the family wishes to live.  Some units are currently available with little wait.
